University Technical Services, Inc. (dba uniTEC), through a subcontract with Caelum West Corporation, supports the U.S. Army at White Sands Missile Range (WSMR). The missile range is a tri-service weapons system testing range located in the southern part of New Mexico, with headquarters being centrally located among Las Cruces, NM, Alamogordo, NM, and El Paso, TX. WSMR is the largest overland test range in the free world, providing quality test and evaluation, research, and other technical services to the Department of Defense (DOD) acquisition programs.
White Sands Missile Range occupies a two-million acre area about the size of Delaware and Rhode Island combined. It is located in the Tularosa Basin between the Sacramento Mountains on the east and the San Andreas and Organ Mountains on the west. The installation opened on July 9, 1945, as White Sands Proving Ground. One week later, the world’s first atomic bomb was exploded on the range at an area now known as Trinity Site. Missile testing began in September 1945 with Tiny Tim rocket booster firings.
